New details released about remains of child found in Garfield Park lagoon

CHICAGO — The slow process of draining the Garfield Park lagoon continues as police look for more remains of a child.
Community members held a vigil near the lagoon Tuesday night.
The remains found over the weekend are believed to be those of an African-American boy, between 8 months and 4-years-old.
However, the medical examiner’s office says a “mixed race heritage” and the possibility the body is that of a girl cannot be ruled out. And the age could be closer to between 2 and 3 years old.
“All the body parts appear to be from a child of approximately the same age,” medical examiner and police said in a statement. “The hair was short, curly and black in color; the eyes were brown; and the earlobes were not pierced, suggesting the child may be male (but female gender cannot be ruled out at present).”
Authorities say they are testing DNA samples taken from the child’s recovered remains and are also checking for dental records. Footprints and fingerprints have also been taken.
Officers have been searching since Saturday when someone called 911 to report a foot floating in the lagoon.
Police say the draining work and investigation could take two to four days.
